Although certain countries are tempted to adopt a protectionist stance, the liberalisation of the food trade will increase as a result of: population statistics and, indirectly, the global demand for foodstuffs. The world population will increase by 1.1% per year until 2030 and demand for agricultural products by 1.4% per year in the next 20 years (source: FAO). Agricultural products represent 10% of global commerce and will be driven by the growing population. But it is the processed products that are likely to have the strongest and fastest growth due to changes in eating habits in the emerging and developing countries – not forgetting the western world where the demand for processed products remains strong.

Since 2000, the value of the global food market has risen by 5% per year on average. There is considerable growth potential in many areas: the major countries with large populations (India, China), the countries bordering the Mediterranean, sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, South America (Brazil, Mexico, Columbia), Asia (Vietnam, Indonesia) and others.
